4 Steps to Find The Perfect Beard Barber
We have all seen them; You know who I am talking about; Those guys; Those guys who trusted the wrong person who gave them that “Hack Job” they call a beard cut.
Think about it. How angry would you be if you spent all that time getting your beard to the length you want? Then in a fury of misjudgment, it is all gone. G-O-N-E, gone! Oh, the agony! Which begs to question, are all barbers created equal? Simple answer is No! With the rising popularity of beards comes an increasing number of shops offering beard trims. You need to be selective. Don’t just let any person with a pair of scissors go near your beard. Would you trust an untrained professional near your neckline with a straight razor? If the answer is no then you already know where I am going with this.
Finding a good Beard barber can be trying, at best. You spent weeks, months, or even years perfecting your Man-mane. For most, to include myself, this requires not just skill, but also trust. Additionally, this will require the Barber and you a firm understanding of what you want. The last thing you want to tell them is, “Just take a little off the top”.
We here at The Beard Struggle (TBS) want to get you to the proper place, to a proper Barber/ Stylist, to get you the proper trim that pleases you and fits your style. However, how do you do that? Homework, my fuzzy friend or you can click on the map image below to transported to to our International Beard Barber Map (Powered by Google Maps).
4 Steps to The Perfect Beard Barber
Step 1: Homework
Now the first step to finding the perfect barber is Homework. And you are probably thinking to yourself that you would not have to do homework ever again. The key to any successful story is to do the proper research.
"are all barbers created equal? Simple answer is No"
Now, you are probably wondering, “What exactly am I searching for”?
Talk to Your Friends
If you are beard, like me, then your probably have friends who are also bearded. Beards attract like minded bearded men. Some get theirs trimmed all the time. Use their beard to gauge if their barber does a good job. Ask yourself these questions:
- Does it look good?
- Does it fit their face?
- Is it faded right?
If it does not, then move on to your next bearded friend, and then, maybe later on when you find you perfect beard barber, you politely suggest to them that they use your barber. If it does, then ask them where they are located so you can check them out.
Ask for Referrals
This is a very good way to find a beard barber in your local area. If you see a great beard in your area, don't be afraid to ask him if he has a beard barber in the area he recommends. More than likely, he will be happy to help.
The Power of Social Media
For some reason this is still an untapped resource. Most people today can put out a question on multiple platforms and in a matter of minutes, viola, you will get recommendations for thousands and thousands of Barbers that people use. Maybe more then you have hoped. So, do yourself a favor, put it out there that you would like recommendations and let the reviews flow in.
A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
It is important to describe to your would-be barber what EXACTLY you want. Trying to no let them get creative with your masterpiece. And if you think that describing to them what you would like might be hard, bring a picture of what your desired outcome would be.
Step 2: Interview Your Barbers
You read that right; Visit your Barbers (Plural). After you have gotten a list of who you might think would be a prime candidate to trim your Man-mane it might be beneficial to have a chat with them. As such, I recommend visiting the barber first hand, even if it’s just to check it out without sitting down for a trim. Additionally, bring in your research, show them the pictures of what you are looking for. Talk to them and ask important questions and you’ll be able to tell who knows beards pretty quickly. Here are some suggestions of questions that might be beneficial:
- What are the different style options available for my beard?
- How long can I grow it while still keeping it professional?
- How do I know where to keep my shave line around my jaw?
- What shave product is best to use to maintain clean lines on my neck and cheeks?
- What direction is best to comb my beard?
- How often should I come back to have it professionally groomed?
Step 3: The Visit
It is important to speak up when you sit down to get your beard trimmed. Never think they heard you. Double-stating is not rude, it is concise. It may be beneficial to have them repeat back to you what they heard or understood. This ensures that they got the message. However, be respectful, if you are rude, they accidentally – on purpose, give you the worst trim of your life and they do not have to be seen with it; you do! As such, they are a professional and they will likely understand why you are being so detailed in your request.
Step 4: The Result
After your visit you need to get some opinions. I pray that you get great reviews. Getting bad reviews are never fun. Then reflect. How difficult was it to explain your desired outcome? If is was difficult, they may not be the barber for you. You are the only one who can gauge this. Remember to repeat these steps as many times as necessary until they understand what it is that you are seeking, WITHOUT QUESTION. We hope this article helped you. Please share with your fellow Bearded Brethren so they too may benefit from what you have learned.
